Egge & Elkas

I didn’t bring my camera tonight, but I went down to the Rivoli to see Anna Egge and Peter Elkas. Anna has a beautiful voice, and a handful of really good songs, but I’m not sure if I’m totally sold on her. Perhaps it’s partially because she kinda looks like a woman I work with, who I’m not too fond of. Perhaps it’s her songs. I dunno. Either way, her set was enjoyable, but nothing to write home about. She wins bonus points for the cover of Belle & Sebastian’s “A Summer Wasting” found on her MySpace. Peter’s set, however, was fabulous as always. Wavelength 488

Went to one of the final nights of Wavelength. It was a “round robin” featuring way too many bands. Among them was Doctor Ew, aka Drew Smith of the Bicycles. It was nice to see a former Bicycle performing some new material.

FotC – “I Told You I Was Freaky”

Picked up this today, on vinyl. Awesome packaging. Most of these songs are known by everyone by now, thanks to the amazing TV show. Theres some definite highlights on this record, among them, “Sugalumps,” “Hurt Feelings” and “Carol Brown.” There’s also some filler, including “Angels.”

TWM – Cheap Speakers, Brent Randall & Mark Bragg

Another Tuesday night, another adventure at Rancho Relaxo, thanks to Dan Wolovick and his excellent booking skills, Rancho is the place to be. Unfortunately it has horrible lighting. Either way, The Cheap Speakers, Brent Randall & His Pinecones and Mark Bragg all played a great night.

Julie Doiron at Lee’s Palace

Jennifer Polk (aka History Jen) reviewed October 27th’s Julie Doiron show with Herman Dune and Shotgun Jimmie. Check it out. Photos by me.

New Record: Music Go Music’s “Expressions”

NPR’s Carrie Brownstein posted some video links on her blog Monitor Mix. I was in awe after seeing those videos. The songs were catchy, timeless, and fun. I immediately emailed Soundscapes (oddly enough thinking I was emailing Criminal Records) asking if they had it in stock. They didn’t because they don’t specialize in vinyl, like Criminal, but ordered it in for me. I picked it up today, and I really love it.
