Recollection Volume 5 – Luxury Liner

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: Luxury Liner Artist: Emmylou Harris Released: 1977 Format(s) I own it on: Vinyl Emmylou Harris’s career was defined by her professional relationship with Gram Parsons. She was the voice that made his songs ache so much. Their vocal harmonies were ideal. This was Harris’s fourth album and it featured two Parsons songs, the title track, and the classic Flying Burrito Brothers song “She.” As much of a fan as I am for both Parsons and Harris, I have barely listened to this… Read More »Recollection Volume 5 – Luxury Liner

Recollection Volume 4 – Electric Ladyland

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: Electric Ladyland Artist: The Jimi Hendrix Experience Released: 1968 Format(s) I own it on: CD This album is kind of the purpose of this project; to listen to records I haven’t listened to in a long time. Jimi Hendrix was an artist I listened to in high school. I think it was expected that every 15 year old would love Jimi Hendrix. I don’t really know why. I would categorize Hendrix’s music as “guitar wankery.” Seriously, “Voodoo Chile” is 15 minutes long.… Read More »Recollection Volume 4 – Electric Ladyland

Recollection Volume 3 – Steve Threw Up

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: Steve Threw Up Artist: Beck Released: 1994 Format(s) I own it on: 7″ “Steve Threw Up” is a strange song. It’s one of Beck’s many novelty records, never being released on any of his Geffen records. Beck is known for many of these novelty songs such as “Satan Gave Me A Taco,” but was somehow able to even have a regular and respected career. That’s impressive. The B-Side is a song called “Mutherfukka,” which surprisingly was released on Beck’s Geffen debut Mellow… Read More »Recollection Volume 3 – Steve Threw Up

Recollection Volume 2 – Depend On This

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: Depend On This Artist: Ruth Minnikin and Her Bandwagon Released: 2009 Format(s) I own it on: Vinyl No, seriously, this is random. Yes, Ruth Minnikin sang on the last album, and now here we are talking about one of hers, but honestly, it’s random. Depend On This is two variations of one EP. Side one (and yes, I own on this on vinyl) has six songs in a straight up folk-pop arrangement with elements of ragtime and jazz, while side two… Read More »Recollection Volume 2 – Depend On This

The Joel Plaskett Emergency - Down At The Khyber

Recollection Volume 1 – Down At The Khyber

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly. Album: Down At The Khyber Artist: The Joel Plaskett Emergency Released: 2001 Format(s) I own it on: CD/Vinyl The Joel Plaskett Emergency’s Down At The Khyber is the perfect choice to start this project. The album was chosen randomly, but Plaskett was the first artist I ever interviewed1 Pictured to the left is the album’s vinyl release. When I interviewed Plaskett I had him sign my copy; it sits framed in my living room. Plaskett had, throughout his years with Thrush Hermit, traveled from coast… Read More »Recollection Volume 1 – Down At The Khyber

Recollection

Next week I’m starting a little project. I’m going to review every album I own. That’s a lot of records. I’ve thrown them all into a database and have a script which randomly chooses a record number, I then review it. This is an excuse to break out from my constant playlists. It’s also a goal to get myself writing more, and hopefully better. It’ll also give me a chance to perhaps do some small interviews. We’ll see where this goes.

Beatles on Letterman

To celebrate The Beatles performing on Ed Sullivan, in 1964, David Letterman, who hosts his show on the same stage, has been inviting bands to perform Beatles songs. Broken Bells – And I Love Her Looping Ringo’s drumming from “I Am The Walrus,” Broken Bells add some sparse electronic music, acoustic guitar, and vocals. The tempo is slowed down and they were very effective in creating a melancholy mood to the song. It honestly reminds me of Sinister-era Belle & Sebastian. A higher compliment, I can barely fathom. Of course for those unaware, Brian Burton is Danger Mouse. Danger Mouse made the epic Grey Album which mixed both Jay-Z’s Black Album with The… Read More »Beatles on Letterman

These photos kind of suck. I’m not happy at all with what I took at the show, but I promised myself I would blog more.
