Orange Is The New Black

I’ve been powering through NetFlix’s new TV show Orange Is The New Black. The show is about a woman in her early 30s, starting a new business, found the man to spend her life with, suddenly has to come to terms with mistakes from her past. Piper Chapman spent much of her early 20s in a relationship with Alex Vause, a beautiful drug smuggler. Vause fingers her as a money smuggler, and Chapman finds herself beginning a new life in prison. The format for the show is to tell a story in present day prison, while flashing back to the story of how an inmate got into prison. The first episode… Read More »Orange Is The New Black

Nick Ferrio

Poor Pilgrims Island Show 6

Sunday marked the sixth Poor Pilgrims Island Show. Most concerts are very static; Poor Pilgrims differentiates itself by having each act performing at a different location on Toronto Island. Starting at the Franklin Storybook Garden was Peterborough’s Nick Ferrio. He played some good country songs with only himself, a guitar, and a backing vocalist. Reminded me of Daniel Romano, and that’s quite a good thing. Next up we went to the Dragon Boat Launch where Steve Kado and friends were performing his piece “2003.” I personally would call it “Steve Kado’s Experiments in Tedium.” It essentially consisted of two notes for over 40 minutes. It was painful. At least the… Read More »Poor Pilgrims Island Show 6

Metropolitan Toronto

Metro

I like the old Metropolitan Toronto logo. Metro hasn’t existed for about 15 years, and yet the logo is everywhere in the city.

Roll in the soap

Cherry 2000

Sam Treadwell is having a lovely evening at home, chatting with his android when they decide to have a roll in the soap. If he had consulted his android’s owner’s manual, he would have known that moisture and electronics do not mix. Sadly his android short circuits and dies. I never actually thought there would be a film about a man’s love for his Fleshlight, but here we are. This man is so distraught by the death of his sex toy that he goes on a mission to find a replacement to upload her personality into. He’s shown all sorts of choices, but none are Cherry 2000, a long discontinued model.… Read More »Cherry 2000

Children of Men

At the suggestion of a friend I watched Children of Men. In the near future, no one can procreate, the youngest human has died. He was 18 years old. After hearing the news, bombs go off. Government is closing its borders to foreign nationals, as terrorism becomes an every day reality. Theo Faron is asked to escort a foreigner to safety. It turns out the woman he is trying to save is pregnant and about to give birth. The film was really good. While it was a negative dystopia, that were slivers of hope. Interesting scenarios, and a good examination of a government controlling its people.

Curtis from Twitch City

Animated GIFs

Animated GIFs are fun to make. I’ve made a few over the past few months. First we have a clip from the brilliant CBC show Twitch City. Just before this clip, Hope shows Curtis what TV was like before the cats took over. He gets excited seeing human TV. I don’t remember why Fry turned into a centipede, but I enjoyed it enough to make an animated GIF. This might have been the first I made. My Twitter friend1 tweeted about how awesome Sulu’s shrug and smile is here, so I made her a GIF. Finally, I just made this one. This is the full Shatner! Read: Fake Friend [↩]

Cars 2

I think when Pixar announced they would be making a sequel to Cars, everyone over the age of 10 was unhappy. While Pixar consistently makes some of the best films, Cars was one of the few failures. Financially, Cars was a huge success, but cinematically it wasn’t a very good film. Since Cars 2 came out, I’d been wanting to see it, just because it’s Pixar, but never really having the desire. I finally watched it, and I have to confess, it’s a good film. It’s not as good as most Pixar films, but it’s certainly better than its predecessor. Cars 2 is a spy film. Like the Bond films, the audience is immediately… Read More »Cars 2

In Review

Going through my old blog posts to see how it looks with the new theme. It all seems to be working well, but I came across a lot of posts that are a month in review. I had set up a goal for how much media I’d consume in that year and tracked it. I liked that. I’m going to start doing that for the rest of the year. So here are my goals from July 9-December 31… Books I’ll read (5): Films I’ll see (20): Albums I’ll buy (20): Concerts I’ll attend (15): Plays I’ll attend (3):

TURF Video

I shot a lot of video during Toronto Urban Roots Festival… here you go, internets.

The Sadies

TURF Day 4

The Sadies One could write a thousand words about The Sadies, and none would come close to describing what this video shows. Was that good for you, too? The Sadies, as you can see are a country band, with a lot of surf and punk in their hearts. Dallas Good, Travis Good, Mike Belitsky, and Sean Dean always put on an incredible show. Dallas and Travis Good have this schtick where they get close to one another and swap fretboards. Kurt Vile, who joined The Sadies on stage for a song, was watching from the side of the stage, at this point, he pointed at the two Good brothers and… Read More »TURF Day 4
