The Avengers in Glorious 2D

On a whim, I went to see Joss Whedon’s latest film Marvel’s The Avengers! Yes, “Marvel’s” is in the title, ugh! The Avengers is the story of superheroes joining forces to defeat the evil Loki. The heroes are Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain America, and The Hulk. The previous films were mediocre to bad films starring these superheroes, then ends of each film had Samuel L. Jackson as Director Fury trying to cobble together the Avengers. The end is near, so the heroes must come together and kick some ass. For those unfamiliar with Joss Whedon’s work, he really likes writing about heroines; from Buffy The Vampire Slayer… Read More »The Avengers in Glorious 2D

Joel Plaskett Emergency at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Recently Canadian heartthrob and rock balladeer Joel Plaskett committed himself to recording and delivering a song a week. He would go into the studio, record a song, mix and master it, and then send it off to the CBC where it would premiere the next day, and then be available for purchase on iTunes. This is Scrappy Happiness the latest Joel Plaskett Emergency record. For those unaware, The Joel Plaskett Emergency is Chris Pennell, Dave Marsh, and of course, Joel Plaskett. Plaskett has released seven albums since 1999 and penned some truly classic Canadian songs. In Need of Medical Attention, Joel Plaskett (1999) Down At The Khyber, The Joel Plaskett… Read More »Joel Plaskett Emergency at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre

How to tie a bow tie

So we all know that bow ties are cool. Right? Right. I get a lot of questions when I wear bow ties. The most common question is whether it’s a pre-tied tie, or if I tied it myself. As someone who knows how to tie a bow tie, I can’t fathom any reason someone would wear a pre-tied bow tie. it’s like someone older than 10 wearing a pre-tied tie. Silly, right? The difference is that any man older than 16 should know how to tie a tie, but it’s much rarer to know how to tie a bow tie. The second question I often get is how I learned… Read More »How to tie a bow tie

Oh no! iPhone

A few days ago I realized that I haven’t changed my iPhone password since I first purchased the device a year and a half ago. So I did what any normal person would do, I changed my password. After that I spent two days typing in my old password, getting rejected, and putting in the new password. No problem. I’d get used to the password. I was out at the Horseshoe Tavern with two thirds of Daniel, Fred, and Julie, and a friend of Julie’s from Hot Docs1. I was using my phone, I was still entering the wrong password initially and then putting in the right one, and all… Read More »Oh no! iPhone

Cabin In The Woods

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXMfTm2Hbig&w=450] I will start by saying that I’m not a big fan of horror. I like the occasional horror film, but it’s never been a genre to float my boat, and then have zombies climb aboard, and sink the boat while they eat my brains. Cabin In The Woods is not your average horror film. It was written by Joss Whedon (Toy Story, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Firefly) and Drew Goddard (Buffy, Lost, Alias) and directed by Goddard. Obviously two talented writers who have already given us some great and original genre fiction. The film circles around five university students who hop into an RV and head to a…… Read More »Cabin In The Woods

Liberal Party and Abortion

Dear Mr. Rae, Thank you for starting a petition on your party’s website against today’s motion to re-open the debate on a woman’s right to have an abortion. However, the fact that you’re not whipping your party for this vote is very disconcerting. Unfortunately the House of Commons is not an accurate reflection of the people of Canada, and even in an ideal world it never could be. Even if it was, the Commons is a representation of the people of Canada, and the majority cannot in Canada dictate the rights of the minority. This is why your party created the Charter of Rights and Freedoms thirty years ago. It… Read More »Liberal Party and Abortion

Jury Duty

Well that was eventful. Yesterday I got a text from my second in command who informed me that he has strep, and as such cannot come to work until Wednesday at the earliest. Seeing as that would leave the school without any IT support. I emailed both the Head of School and COO to provide me with a letter on company letterhead asking for my jury duty to be deferred. I thought it would be a good idea. The COO didn’t even reply, but the Head of School did. He said he’ll try, but it won’t work. I said this: He didn’t reply to this for some odd reason. Never… Read More »Jury Duty

Hunger Games

Do you know what’s a bad idea? Waking up at 1am. Wanna know what’s a worse idea? Going to a movie at 9:20pm. Yup… I fell asleep in a movie theatre. Fortunately, Ashley was kind enough to give me a nudge and wake me up… and then mean enough to laugh at me. I can’t blame my sleeping on the film. As the film was absolutely wonderful. A young woman must compete in a life or death battle, all so that her younger sister doesn’t have to face the danger. It’s a story of danger, and violence, and love, and awesomeness. Just rest beforehand.
