The Sweet Hereafter

The Sweet Hereafter is a classic Atom Egoyan film from 1997. Egoyan’s narrative is emotional and strong. He deftly parallels the grief of Ian Holm’s character over his destroyed family with the grief of the the small community who’s children are lost or injured in a school bus crash. Non-linear narrative is something which has come to be more and more common-place. Television has succeeded at this structure with Lost but more often than not, it fails when countless TV writers don’t know how to make a good teaser and instead jump to the climax of the show. Egoyan is able to successfully navigate the story in a non-linear manner, which… Read More »The Sweet Hereafter

Stop! Sandwich Time!

Over the weekend, I went to Sky Blue Sky again. For those who don’t remember Sky Blue Sky is the Wilco-inspired sandwich shop in The Annex. This time I went with Via Chicago. Roasted onion and chick peas with a hint of curry topped with mango chutney and a tomato on the bread of your liking. The lovely man who I believe owns the place, suggested I try it on the french bread, I was more than happy to take his suggestion. Ooh! Depth of field. Wait, I’m supposed to talk about the sandwich. I was asked to rate the Hoodoo Voodoo by someone, a while ago, I don’t remember… Read More »Stop! Sandwich Time!

All Night Long

Went to see Thrush Hermit1 on Friday (as I’ve said before). Opening for them was All Night Long. Lead-singer Jelena Petrovic has a stunning smile and was an unwitting model. More photos can be found on Flickr. Adam, we know you went to see Thrush Hermit, shut up about it. [↩]

Music Monday

The Byrds lipsync to “Goin’ Back.” Wait is that Gene Clark subbing in for Crosby? Why yes, I think it is. Well, now we need some Crosby… how about CSN performing at Woodstock? Who’s your favourite Byrd. Mine isn’t Gene Clark, but he’s near the top. I think this one came about because The Byrds realized they had Clarence White in the band. I love the guy at 7:55, though, I think he’s best when they cut back to him at the end.

If I were Phyllis…

My lord, how many times can I post about Phyllis on this blog. Well, once more unto the breach. Saw Thrush Hermit tonight. You’d expect that a show cannot live up to eleven years of expectations. It surpassed it.

Who you gonna weep on, who you gonna sleep on, who you gonna creep on next?

So I should start with an apology. My post about Thrush Hermit, was kinda horrible. Here’s the thing, I don’t go into these blog posts and think to myself, “what do I want to say?” No! I just write! Yeah! Damn you professional writers and your craft, NO! This is my language and I can write what I wanna write. What was I saying? Giraffe? No. Oh yeah, Thrush Hermit. Yeah, that post sucked. It just kinda ended. That was no narrative structure, it just rambled, and rambled, and rambled, and rambled, and rambled. I had a point. I think. Yeah, it was horrible. It was supposed to say that… Read More »Who you gonna weep on, who you gonna sleep on, who you gonna creep on next?

Let’s take down Yelverton Hill

Zunior Head Honcho, and former drummer for the Inbreds Dave Ullrich has posted the following to Twitter. Somewhere in the back of my head, I’m thinking this might just be happening in Kingston1, so I wonder, who’s in for a roadtrip. I’ve got wheels. Ontario, not Jamaica [↩]

Noosed and Haloed Swear Words

There once was a rock and roll band who called themselves Nabisco Fonzie Thrush Hermit. These four young lads, Joel Plaskett, Rob Benvie, Ian McGettigan & Cliff Gibb traveled across Canada to promote their record Clayton Park1. They had a show at The Opera House in Toronto with The Flashing Lights and Local Rabbits; a bill which can only be described as perfection. I had a ticket to this show, it would be my first time seeing Thrush Hermit live. Hermit front-man, Joel Plaskett was sick. Bugger. At least the show with The Flashing Lights and Local Rabbits was more than enough rock and roll for anyone. Thrush Hermit announced… Read More »Noosed and Haloed Swear Words
